Born and raised in a winemaking village in the south of the Czech Republic, Roman Barina was immersed in viticulture from an early age. Surrounded by vines and wine, this early exposure instilled a deep respect for winemakers and the hospitality industry as a whole.
Despite this, Barina pursued a completely different path, choosing to study Asian cultures and languages. This academic journey opened the door to international travel and study, exposing him to diverse communities and a wide range of perspectives—particularly regarding food, drink, and the role these play in cultural identity.
While living in Asia, he began to reflect more deeply on their own culinary and beverage heritage. This introspection ultimately led him back to the wine industry and to their first role as a Sommelier. With a strong desire to learn and grow, they approached the profession with the same respect that had been cultivated during their childhood.
Today, Roman is Head Sommelier at Rosewood London, where he oversees the wine programme, leading the development of an exciting new concept for the hotel.
